Focus.

Distractions, interruptions, loneliness, spending too much time on unproductive tasks … working from home with no boss hanging over us, we all suffer from some if not all of these issues. They all lead to bad time management and lack of focus, which means less money coming in.

The worst thing we can do is constantly switch from one task to another during the day. Every time we divert our focus to a new task, we spend time getting into the ‘zone’ of the new task. Recent research suggested that it can take as long as 20 minutes to get fully into the zone of whatever we are doing. Only then are we wholly focused on the task and able to work most effectively.

Yes, have frequent breaks. Take 5 to stretch, relax, fetch a glass of water. But do not watch TV or make a non-business call that is likely to stop you getting back to work. bring a pen so you can write down ideas that come to you during your break.

Figure out what time you have available and use it, without allowing interruptions or getting distracted. Give all your attention to your top priority for the day, and do not begin any other work until it is finished. Big projects that will take more than one day can be broken down into manageable daily tasks. But however you do it, maintain your focus through all of your working time.
